Bedford is the county town of Bedfordshire.
Bedford's name is believed to have come from the name 'Beda', a Saxon chief and 'ford', which was a crossing point of the Great River Ouse. In the centre of the town, the river is lined with gardens called 'The Embankment'. In the gardens there is a memorial to those who fell in WW1 designed by Charles Sargeant Jagger.
In medieval times there was a castle at Bedford, though today only small remnants survive.
From the latter part of the sixteenth to the early twentieth century, Bedford was a prominent centre for the lace industry. Industry arrived at the town in the nineteenth century.
There has been a church on the site of St Paul's since the eleventh century. The tall spire of the current church is a prominent feature of the town.
