Biggleswade Fact File
The name of 'Biggleswade' is Anglo-Saxon and derived from 'Biccel', who was an individual and 'waed' which stands for 'ford'.
In 1132, Henry I granted The manor of Biggleswade to Bishop Alexander to help endow Lincoln Cathedral.
Prosperity came to the town with communications such as the River Ivel (which was navigable form the sea from 1758), and later the railways from the mid nineteenth century.
Nearly one third of the town was destroyed by fire in 1785.
Daniel Albone (inventor of the modern tractor, racing cyclist and owner of the Ivel Cycle Works) came from Biggleswade.
